Axis Type Foundry is a type foundry founded in 1979 by Oslo and
Norwood Cleveland in Schenectady, New York. These two brothers
started the business in their mother’s garage. Axis Type Foundry was
one of the first independent type foundries to establish itself centered on
personal computer technology. Axis Type Foundry holds exclusive license to over 300 original typeface designs created by a roster of contemporary designers. Axis Type Foundry's full line of typefaces, ornaments, and illustrations are available in Type 1 PostScript, TrueType, and Open Type for both the Macintosh and PC. Axis Type Foundry is constantly setting exciting new trends in typography with designs by more than 100 designers and many new releases each year.

In 1980, they moved to Northern California and hired their first full-time employee, Martha Gunderson. Martha is the Creative Director, nowadays. Since our salad days in the old garage we have witnessed the death of press-type and the explosion of digital typography. We no longer produce physical types, all our work now is in the digital realm.

Since 1981, we have produced the famous Font Book typeface library, the world's most comprehensive reference book on digital typefaces. Our work is available from FontShops or your favorite emporium of digital typeface designs. A free Axis Type Foundry Catalog is available from Axis Type Foundry.

Axis Type Foundry's
designs have won numerous awards; Axis Type Foundry was the 1994 recipient of the prestigious Chrysler Award for Innovation in Design and the 1996 Publish Magazine Impact Award. Axis Type Foundry was also the 1997 recipient of the AIGA Gold Medal Award and the 1998 Charles Nyples Award.

In 2003, we moved our operation to Charlotte, North Carolina. We set-up shop in our current location in the Plaza-Central neighborhood. If you’re in Charlotte drop in a say, “Hey Y’all”.
